Twenty volumes printed on Japon Velum and twenty portfolios printed on Japon Tissue. One-hundred large photogravures are personally signed by Edward S. Curtis
I represent an institution that has a complete
set of “The North American Indian” #113 for sale, consisting of 2,228
hand pressed photogravures.
I have examined the entire set, every print and every page.
There are no institutional stamps in the set.
The folios are Tissue (in the market place Tissues have a 20%
premium). The volumes are
Japon Vellum, they are in excellent condition and volume one is hand
signed by Curtis. There are 723 large prints mounted on 18” X 22” paper
and 1,505 smaller images printed on 9 ½” X 12 ¾” paper. This set was a
gift to the institution in 1947 and has seen little daylight since then.
Being in the Curtis business for 35 years this is the finest set
that I have ever seen.
Portfolios one, three and four the images are
hand signed by Curtis. There
were only 41 sets in tissue produced.
Folios 1-10 should be cleaned sometime in the future.
We have contacted The Northern California Art conservatory
located in Sacramento California. They have estimated that they can
clean the tissue with signature within a range of $200 – 300 each.
A set sold in auction by Christie’s at $1.416
million, four years ago, and a little over a year ago a set sold for
$1.7 million through a private gallery and none of the 20 folios were
hand signed. Curtis sets, seldom appear in the market place.
With 110-signed folio images, this set would
bring well over the two million mark in a normal business climate.
“The North American Indian” consisting of 20 Volumes, 20
Portfolios is the bluest of the blue chips. This is truly a
marvelous set.
There is a private airport 20 minuets from the
institution for your convenience to examine the set.
